Africa’s Youngest Elected President

Senegal’s President-Elect, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Vows to Combat Corruption and Reform Economy

DAKAR, Senegal – Senegal awakened on Tuesday to the news of its newly elected president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a 44-year-old former tax inspector and political novice who captivated voters, particularly the unemployed youth, with his pledge to combat corruption and overhaul the economy. Faye’s ascent to the presidency was propelled by the endorsement of popular opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, who was disqualified from running due to a previous conviction. Faye’s victory in Sunday’s presidential election marked a remarkable rise for the politician, who was freed from prison less than two weeks prior and is now poised to become the youngest leader of the West African nation.

In his inaugural speech as president-elect on Monday evening, Faye reiterated his campaign promises, stating, “I pledge to govern with humility and transparency, and to fight corruption at all levels. I pledge to devote myself fully to rebuilding our institutions.” His commitment to tackling corruption and reforming Senegal’s institutions has resonated with the country’s citizens, who are eager for change and a brighter future.
