Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest privately owned airline, plans to expand its international routes with flights to the United States by the end of 2024, connecting Lagos to Houston and New York. This significant move comes after Air Peace’s recent launch of flights to London, indicating rapid growth in its international reach. The airline has a fleet of nearly 30 aircraft, including Boeing 777s, 737s, and Embraer E195-E2s, a mix of older and newer models. To support its U.S. expansion, Air Peace aims to acquire additional Boeing 777s, with engineers currently in California inspecting three such aircraft.
However, several challenges could impact the timeline for launching U.S. routes. The acquisition of more Boeing 777s is a complex process, and approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is required, though the Open Skies agreement between Nigeria and the U.S. simplifies the regulatory aspect. Despite these hurdles, Air Peace’s planned expansion could create new opportunities for travel and commerce between the two countries. As 2024 approaches, the success of this expansion will depend on the airline’s ability to secure additional aircraft and navigate regulatory requirements, keeping the industry curious about how Air Peace will tackle these obstacles.
