AI capacity building needs stronger university and industry partnerships

The talent question is becoming central to Africa's AI strategy. A cross-country survey covering Ghana, Namibia, Rwanda, Kenya, and Zambia found growing awareness of AI's importance, but also practical gaps in training, infrastructure, funding, and industry engagement.
Universities can introduce AI concepts, but graduates need applied experience, mentorship, live projects, and industry-linked internships. Companies also benefit when they help shape curricula and expose students to production problems rather than purely theoretical work.
The strongest ecosystem approach is collaborative: universities, startups, corporates, and public agencies building shared labs, scholarships, apprenticeships, and responsible AI governance practices. Talent is infrastructure too.
